Counselling is a “talking therapy” which provides a confidential space where you are able to be yourself, without judgement. It may help if you’re thinking about making changes in your life or you’re experiencing uncertainty about your feelings. During counselling you’ll have the opportunity to explore how life events have impacted you and to understand your behaviour patterns. It can help you examine difficult feelings and deal with emotional challenges. Counselling can supporting you in moving towards a happier and more fulfilling life.
The Counsellor’s Role
My role as a counsellor is not to tell you what to do. Instead, I will encourage you to talk about whatever is troubling you, identifying or uncovering any root causes by focusing on your thoughts, feelings and emotions.
Counselling is a process; between appointments you are likely to reflect on the things you have talked about in session. You will not necessarily feel better straightaway – in fact, sometimes you can feel a little worse, as you awaken thoughts and feelings which have been pushed away or buried deep within you. But please don’t give up! By exploring these issues you may well find that the process increases your self-awareness, that you develop new perspectives and that you find healthier ways to reconcile and manage your thoughts, feelings or behaviours. All of this can help to empower you, enabling you to change, grow and make positive choices for yourself.
